Iwo Jima Flag Raising

The flag raising at Iwo Jima is one of the most iconic images from WWII. The photograph was taken on Feb 23, 1945 on top of Mt. Suribachi. What is less well known is that 2 flags were raised that day. The first was declared to be too small, and was replaced with a larger flag. This second flag raising is the one that we see the most, and still speaks to our resolve throughout WWII.

Flag Etiquette ~ 1942 Flag Code Law

For nearly 50 years after Congress authorized the design for our flag, citizens had no uniform set of rules to guide them in displaying and showing respect for the flag. To supply such a guide, a National Flag Conference was held in Washington D.C. on Flag Day, June 14, 1923. Congress made the flag code law in 1942. Click on this link to find the provision at CVSFlags.com.
