The flag raising at Iwo Jima is one of the most iconic images from WWII. The photograph was taken on Feb 23, 1945 on top of Mt. Suribachi. What is less well known is that 2 flags were raised that day. The first was declared to be too small, and was replaced with a larger flag. This second flag raising is the one that we see the most, and still speaks to our resolve throughout WWII.
